The Delta SkyMiles Gold American Express card costs $150 per year. Use it correctly and you can extract more than $300 in real travel value from it. Here is exactly how to do that, based on my personal experience as a Flying Blue Platinum member based in Las Vegas.
Who this card is for
This card makes sense for three types of travelers:
- Delta frequent flyers who check bags and want status-like perks without paying for a premium card
- Miles collectors who want to accumulate Delta SkyMiles to redeem on SkyTeam partner airlines like Air France or KLM
- Occasional travelers who want a low annual fee card with real travel benefits
I fall into the second category. I am Flying Blue Platinum, which means Air France is my primary airline even if I live in the US. But because Air France and Delta are both SkyTeam partners, Delta SkyMiles can be redeemed on Air France flights. That connection makes this card relevant far beyond Delta loyalists.

The benefits that actually matter
1. Free checked bag
The card gives you one free checked bag on every Delta flight. That applies to you and up to eight people on the same reservation.
Delta charges up to $35 per bag each way. One round trip with one bag saves you $70. Two people on the same booking saves $140. That alone covers most of the annual fee, crazy no?
2. TakeOff 15: 15% off every award ticket
This is the most underrated benefit of the card.
Every time you redeem Delta SkyMiles for a flight, you pay 15% fewer miles. That applies to every cabin, including business class.
Delta runs promotions regularly. During those promotions, one-way business class seats to Europe can drop below 100,000 miles. With TakeOff 15, that same seat costs you fewer than 85,000 miles. I have used this personally to book lie-flat seats to Europe at a price most travelers think is impossible.
3. Priority boarding
The card gives you Group 5 boarding. It is not front-of-plane boarding, but it guarantees overhead bin space on a full flight. On a long-haul flight, that matters.
4. 20% back on inflight purchases
You get 20% back as a statement credit on prepurchased meals and inflight food and drinks. Not a life-changing benefit, but a real one.
Breaking down the $150 annual fee
Here is where the math gets interesting.

The Delta Stays credit alone changes the equation. Book any hotel through Delta’s booking portal and you get $100 back as a statement credit. Your net annual fee drops to $50.
If you spend $10,000 on the card in a calendar year, you also receive a $200 Delta flight credit. At that point the card is generating positive value.
The SkyTeam angle most people miss
Most reviews of this card assume you fly Delta exclusively. That is not the only use case.
Delta SkyMiles are part of the SkyTeam alliance. You can redeem them on Air France, KLM, Korean Air, and other partner airlines. If you already collect miles across multiple programs, Delta SkyMiles adds another redemption option for the same destinations.
This is why I carry this card despite being primarily an Air France flyer. I earn miles on everyday spending and redeem them on Air France flights when Delta promotions make the math work.
What about Delta status?
I have no Delta status. When I book an award ticket with miles, Delta does not recognize my Flying Blue Platinum status. No upgrades, no perks, nothing from Air France carries over.
The Gold Amex fills that gap partially. The free checked bag and priority boarding apply regardless of your status level. For miles collectors who redeem on Delta without having Delta status, those two benefits are genuinely valuable.
Who should skip this card
Be honest with yourself before applying.
- You never fly Delta and have no interest in SkyTeam airlines. The miles earn well but they are locked inside the Delta ecosystem.
- You fly Delta once a year or less and never check bags. The benefits will not cover the $150 fee.
- You want a flexible travel card that transfers to multiple airline programs. The Amex Gold Card earns Membership Rewards points, which transfer to Delta and 20+ other partners. That is a better option if flexibility matters more than Delta-specific perks.

If you fly Delta at least twice a year and check a bag, the Gold pays for itself. If you fly Delta rarely and never check bags, the Blue is the smarter choice.
