If you’ve not looked into the Delta SkyMiles Program—but are a seasoned traveler— you ought to! As one of the major US airline carriers with over 15,000 daily flights, frequent fliers can rack up miles, perks and travel benefits in no time.
With hubs in Atlanta, LA, Seattle, Detroit, Minneapolis, and NYC, Delta has the country well-covered in order to transport you to 1,000+ locations in over 50 countries globally.
SkyMiles members not only earn miles with Delta flights; flights booked on Delta Connection and Delta Shuttle, as well as many partner airlines—AirFrance, Virgin Atlantic, and KLM to name a few—offer opportunities to rack up miles, too.
Miles earned can be traded for more flights, of course, but can also be redeemed for upgrades inflight, shopping deals, or tickets to fun events.
Members flying on Delta also have the chance to earn Medallion Qualification Miles, Segments and Dollars (MQMs, MQSs, MQDs)—the gateway to this airline’s most exclusive traveler perks. And for those that want to gain additional miles, securing a Delta SkyMiles credit card through American Express means that any purchases outside the airline can be used towards travel as well.
You might be asking if there’s any limitations to the Delta SkyMiles program. As the #2 Best Airline Rewards Program according to US News, this rank assures you that there’s not many.
Members are advised to book their travel plans as far in advance as possible as award travel seating can sometimes be in limited supply. In addition, to reach elite status, travelers must fly frequently, and/or make a high number of qualified purchases.
As far as points systems go, Delta SkyMiles offers one of the industry’s most straightforward and generous ones. For every dollar spent on a Delta affiliated flight, you’ll earn 5 frequent flyer miles. For non-Delta flights that are partnered within the SkyMiles program, the number of miles earned can vary. Choosing these flights is easy—simply look for a “DL” prefix in the flight number.
Regardless of how they are earned, however, all miles can be used in exchange for future travel on Delta and Delta-affiliated airlines. And miles never expire! Remember those Medallion points mentioned above? You will automatically accrue MQMs for every qualifying flight, helping you to achieve elite Medallion Status and the many upgrades that come with that—like free checked baggage and complimentary seating upgrades.
One last point to consider when comparing which loyalty program is right for you is this: miles earned can also be used for tangible items! Whether it’s shopping inflight on the SkyMiles Marketplace, purchasing premium refreshments onboard, or booking cruises, hotel stays, or car rentals, these miles go a lot farther than air travel!
When booking flights as a SkyMile member, it’s important to note that travel arrangements must be made through the delta.com website or by calling a Delta agent directly. We hope this information was helpful and that you soon enjoy the many benefits that await you as a SkyMiles traveler! And check out my blog post to learn how to earn more Delta Skymiles !$
